The Buckling-Restrained Wall refer to a type of steel plate shear wall that does not undergo out-of-plane buckling. They are composed of steel plate core materials that bear horizontal loads and components that prevent out-of-plane buckling of the core materials. They are improved new-type shear-resistant, shock-absorbing, and energy-dissipating components developed to address the issue of out-of-plane buckling that commonly occurs in ordinary steel plate shear walls. These walls primarily rely on the overall in-plane bending and shear deformation of the core plate to balance horizontal shear forces. As core lateral force-resisting components, they prevent out-of-plane buckling of the core materials, allowing the steel plate walls to undergo shear yielding without buckling, significantly improving their seismic energy-dissipation capacity. Additionally, the out-of-plane restraining plates can also serve as fire protection for the steel plate walls. In buckling-restrained energy-dissipating steel plate walls, only the core materials are connected to the frame beams and columns, and the core materials bear the loads transferred by the frame beams. The out-of-plane restraining plates only constrain the core materials to prevent out-of-plane buckling.
